Alesi dominates for third straight sprint victory

Ferrari academy driver – and son of ex-F1 racer Jean – Giuliano Alesi has won a third straight GP3 sprint event, this time at Spa-Francorchamps.

Alesi dominated to lead all 13 laps and win by 3.3 seconds ahead of Mercedes protégé and championship leader George Russell.

Ryan Tveter claimed third ahead of Honda junior Nirei Fukuzumi as both ART drivers benefitted from early drama involving team-mate Jack Aitken.

Aitken appeared to drift left into the path of Trident’s Dorian Boccolacci across the long Kemmel Straight when both were in the top-six on lap three, resulting in right-rear puncture for himself and front wing damage for the Frenchman.

Campos’ Julien Falchero – who started the race from pole position – gradually fell to fifth in the order.

Haas development driver Arjun Maini was sixth above Anthoine Hubert, who recovered from an awful Saturday to recover two points for his overall weekend score.

Kevin Joerg completed the points positions as Red Bull-backed Niko Kari was given a five-second time penalty for an incident involving Fukuzumi when the Japanese was trying to pass for position.

Sauber development racer Tatiana Calderon ended the race in 13th.

Juan Manuel Correa – completing his first weekend in the series with his maiden sprint contest – suffered mechanical failure with four laps remaining that ended his race in the run-off area approaching the uphill Eau Rouge.
