Ocon claims maiden GP3 pole position in Sochi

ART Grand Prix driver Esteban Ocon secured his maiden GP3 pole position at the Sochi Autodrom as championship leader Luca Ghiotto struggled in qualifying.

A slightly damp but drying track meant the fight for pole position would go down to the wire. Like in practice yesterday, it was Ocon who reigned supreme to take a crucial pole position in Sochi as he looks to close down championship leader Ghiotto. Ocon is now 10 points behind the Italian after picking up four points for taking pole position.

Matheo Tuscher qualified within four hundredths of Ocon’s time and will start in second position. Kevin Ceccon and Alex Palou qualified third and fourth.

Jann Mardenborough led the way early on and despite the switch to from wet tyres to slicks, Mardenborough scored his best qualifying of the season in fifth.

Matt Parry, Luca Ghiotto, Emil Bernstorff, Antonio Fuoco and Seb Morris round out the top ten.

GP3 debutants Michele Beretta and Konstantin Tereshcenko performed strongly. With the duo qualifying twelfth and fifteenth respectively.
