Marc Marquez believes the outright Sachsenring lap record he set at the German Grand Prix will still fall in 2027, even though MotoGP’s incoming 850cc regulations are widely expected to make the rest of the calendar slower.
According to a fresh interview carried by Crash.net, the reigning champion made the prediction after reclaiming Sachsenring’s benchmark from Fabio Di Giannantonio during the German Grand Prix weekend, with the short, twisty German circuit singled out as an exception to tracks where MotoGP’s smaller engines, banned ride-height devices and reduced aerodynamics are due to cut lap times sharply from next season. Marquez suggested his own new mark could be beaten by around a second, putting a 2027 Sachsenring lap into the 1m18s bracket.
Pedro Acosta And Luca Marini Point To New Pirelli Tyres As The Key Variable
Pedro Acosta, who moves to partner Marquez at Ducati Lenovo for the 850cc era, said the outcome will hinge on Pirelli’s new tyre compounds rather than raw power, noting the current 1000cc bikes are already “under-power” for a circuit like Sachsenring compared with faster tracks such as Silverstone.
Luca Marini agreed tyre performance would be decisive, pointing to strong lap times set by rising Moto2 riders over the Sachsenring weekend as evidence that a stronger compound could offset the smaller engines. The Italian said Pirelli is expected to bring a new, faster tyre for 2027.
The debate lands as Marquez closes out his tenth Sachsenring win and MotoGP heads towards its summer break, with question marks also hanging over how Acosta’s own recovery will shape his readiness for the 850cc project he will share with the reigning champion from 2027.
