Marco Bezzecchi has undergone successful surgery on the broken collarbone he suffered in Sachsenring qualifying, with Aprilia targeting a comeback for the MotoGP title contender at next month’s British Grand Prix.
According to an official Aprilia statement carried by Crash.net, the operation was performed by Dr. Giuseppe Porcellini at the University Hospital of Sassuolo on Sunday, with the fracture of Bezzecchi’s left clavicle “reduced and stabilised”. The Italian highsided at Turn 7 in Saturday’s qualifying and was ruled out for the remainder of the German Grand Prix weekend as a result.
Jorge Martin Extends His Championship Grip As Bezzecchi Sidelined
Bezzecchi arrived in Germany just 11 points behind Aprilia team-mate and championship leader Jorge Martin, but Crash.net reports he has taken only 13 points from a possible 148 across his last four rounds, a slump that now adds fresh urgency to MotoGP’s title fight. He risks slipping as low as fifth in the standings depending on how Fabio di Giannantonio, Ai Ogura and Sunday’s Sachsenring winner fare in his absence.
Aprilia stressed that “a more definitive prognosis will be delivered in the coming days” as Bezzecchi’s recovery is assessed, but the timing works in his favour: MotoGP’s four-month summer break gives him until the British Grand Prix at Silverstone on August 9 to be race-fit rather than miss further rounds outright.
