Mir ends Friday at Jerez top of the pile in Moto3

After a wet start to proceedings this morning, the afternoon session was run under beautiful blue skies which led to a flurry of activity across the 40-minute FP2. At the chequered flag, it was championship leader Joan Mir who led the way.

Whilst the track was mostly dry, a few sparse damp patches saw everyone take the opening stages cautiously as they explored the limits of adhesion. As the session wound up to its conclusion, the lap times came in thick and fast.

Leopard’s Mir took a beating two weeks ago in Austin, his lead in the standings cut to just six points. Keen to get back to winning ways, the Spaniard made his intentions clear with a 1m49.584s to go two tenths clear of Texas winner Romano Fenati.

British Talent Team’s John McPhee completed the top three on his Honda, though crashed in the closing minutes and seemingly taking a knock to his hand. Platinum Bay KTM’s Darry Binder was fourth fastest, with the second Leopard bike of Livio Loi rounding out the top five.

SIC58 rider Tony Arbolino was an impressive sixth quickest on a 1m50.692s, but he too crashed at the end of the session, the Italian coming off at the fast Turn 5. Red Bull KTM Ajo’s Niccolo Antonelli was seventh fastest ahead of FP1 leader Jakub Kornfeil, Marcos Ramirez and Lorenzo Dalla Porta.

Aron Canet was the man to beat for much of the United States weekend, but remained largely anonymous this afternoon. The EG 0,0 Honda rider was 11th, with Jorge Martin, Fabio Di Giannantonio, Tatsuki Suzuki and Enea Bastianing completing the top 15.

The closing stages of second practice saw a number of riders hitting the deck along with McPhee and Arbolino. Andrea Migno slid off at the final corner, as did Sky VR46 team-mate Nicolo Bulega, whilst Philipp Oettl crashed at Turn 1. Thankfully, all riders were unharmed in their incidents.
