Italian rider Paolo Grassia ended the first day of running for the inaugural World Supersport 300 Championship top of the pile.
WorldSSP300 is the World Superbike Championship’s entry level category, newly formed for the 2017 season. Following all European rounds of the campaign, WorldSSP300 boasts an impressive 35-rider permanent entry list.
As in WorldSBK and World Supersport, the 300 class grid is decided by a Superpole session, with the top 10 at the end of practice gaining direct passage into SP2.
Grassia, on the Team Italia Kawasaki, headed Halcourier Racing Yamaha’s Borja Sanchez in this morning’s session. The Italian edged Sanchez by just 0.023s, the pair enjoying a near-second gap to third-placed Marc Garcia.
Robert Schotman was top GRT Yamaha rider in fourth spot on a 2m13.757s, with Giuseppe De Gruttola completing the top five his SK Racing YZF-R3.
Kenan Sofuoglu-backed Harun Cabuk guided his Puccetti Kawasaki to seventh on the combined timesheets, with Daniel Valle just a few hundredths ahead. Reigning European Junior Cup champion Mika Perez was eighth, with Gabriel Norderer and Armando Pontone rounding out the top 10.
The fight for the top two spots in SP1 tomorrow will be frantic, with the likes of MTM Racing’s Scott Deroue, MotoxRacing’s Mykyta Kalinen and SK Racing’s Alfonso Coppola only narrowly missing the top 10 on Friday.
FP2 was a busy session, but because it was run under wet conditions times from this morning remained static. Two riders, Jarred Schultz and Nicola Settimo, failed to qualify.
