Haslam joins Puccetti for Donington WorldSBK wildcard

Kawasaki rider Leon Haslam will make the first of several rumoured wildcard appearances in the World Superbike Championship in 2017 at his home round at Donington at the end of May.

The five-time WorldSBK race winner re-signed for Kawasaki UK for 2017 for a full campaign in the British Championship with JG Speedfit, as well as appearances in the World Championship and at the Suzuka 8 Hours endurance race.

Haslam last rode in a WorldSBK event at the season-ending Qatar round last year with Pedercini, where he finished a respectable 11th and fifth despite having not ridden the WorldSBK-spec ZX-10R up to that point.

The Briton was called on by Puccetti Racing in January to replace the injured Randy Krummenacher at the Portimao test, and was fourth fastest on the unofficial time sheets, missing out on top spot by just half a second.

“I’m so excited to be riding at my home World Superbike round for the Puccetti Racing Team,” said Haslam.

“I had a really good test in January in Portugal and was posting quick times from the first time on track. So to take that package to Donington Park and getting to with the team again is so exciting.

“I just want to thank the Puccetti team and Kawasaki for the opportunity and hopefully I can give the crowd something to shout about.

“It’s great Mike and the guys at JG Speedfirt are supporting our entry too, hopefully we can all enjoy some success together at the British round of the World Superbike Championship to complement our BSB exploits.”

Haslam will kick off his tilt for a maiden BSB title at Donington this weekend for the opening round of the 2017 season, before returning on May 26-28 to test his mettle against the WorldSBK paddock.
