Canet heads Fenati on day one of Jerez test

Estrella Galicia 0,0 Honda’s Aron Canet ended the first day of official testing for the Moto3 World Championship from Jerez top of the pile, whilst the returning Romano Fenati impressed in second.

Canet was one of 2016’s stand-out rookies in the lightweight class, and a lot is expected of him this season. The Spaniard shot to the top of the time sheets on Wednesday’s final session, guiding his Honda to a 1m46.465s to go almost three tenths clear of the field.

Italian Fenati has been sidelined since the Austrian Grand Prix last season after he was dropped by the Sky Racing VR46 Team for repeated misconduct.

Snapped up by the Marinelli Rivacold Snipers Honda squad for 2017, Fenati has a point to prove and made his intentions clear with the second quickest time of the day. Gresini’s new signing Jorge Martin completed the top three.

Bo Bendsneyder was top KTM rider at the end of the day on his Ajo machine, clocking a 1m47.062s to go fourth. Juanfran Guevara rounded out the top five on his RBA Racing KTM, with Enea Bastianini settling into life at the EG 0,0 team in sixth.

Philipp Oettl put his Schedl GP KTM seventh, with Sky Racing’s Nicolo Bulega, British Talent Team’s John McPhee and Leopard Racing’s Joan Mir filling out the remaining spots inside the top 10.

Darryn Binder continues to get to grips with the switch from Mahindra to KTM machinery at the Platinum Bay Real Estate team in 11th, with reigning Red Bull Rookies Cup champion Ayumu Sasaki 12th on his SIC Racing Honda.

CIP Mahindra’s Marco Bezzecchi was 13th fastest from Sky Racing’s Andrea Migno and Aspar Mahindra’s Albert Arenas.

The Moto3 field will be back in action tomorrow morning from 11:20 (GMT+1).
