SIC sign Sasaki for 2017

SIC sign Sasaki for 2017

2015 Asia Talent Cup and this year’s Red Bull Rookies Cup Champion Ayumu Sasaki will join the Sepang International Circuit Moto3 team for the 2017 season. He will join Malaysian Adam Norrodin at the squad next year.

At just 16 years old, Sasaki already has an impressive CV to his name. He romped to 17 podium finishes this season on his way to the Red Bull Rookies Cup, five of those victories, as well as several rostrum appearances in the CEV Repsol Junior Moto3 World Championship. The Japanese rider also dominated the 2015 Asia Talent Cup, winning the series by 51 points.

“I’m very happy to be joining the SIC Racing Team in 2017. It’s a great opportunity for me to take the step up to the Moto3 class and I can’t wait to work with my new team,” Sasaki said.

“To compete in Moto3 is one of my dreams. This is the highest level of 250 class, so I know it will be difficult but I’m really looking forward to giving it my all. 2017 may be my debut year in the championship but I feel confident and ready to battle within the field. I would like to thank Honda and Sepang International Circuit for their support and I hope to repay them with good results.”

Sasaki won’t have to wait long to test his mettle against some of his rival for next year, as he has been chosen by Gresini to fill in for the injured Enea Bastianini this weekend. The Italian rider was involved in a nasty crash at Turn 10 in the Australian Grand Prix that saw him hit by Jorge Navarro. Bastianini suffered fractures to his rib and a vertebra, and has been declared unfit to ride at Sepang.
