Lando Norris will start the Formula 1 Belgian Grand Prix from tenth place on the grid after McLaren confirmed a 10-place penalty for the reigning World Champion.
According to reports from Motorsport.com and confirmed by McLaren, the penalty stems from the fitting of a brand-new electronics unit ahead of this weekend’s race at Spa-Francorchamps. The decision marks a fresh headache for Norris, who has endured persistent reliability issues with the same component throughout 2026.
Fresh Electronics Woe for McLaren’s Title Defender
The electronics unit has proven problematic for Norris all season, most notably in March when an identical issue forced his complete retirement from the Chinese Grand Prix. That DNS in Shanghai left him chasing points in the championship battle, and the latest penalty compounds the frustration for McLaren’s garage as they prepare for one of the season’s most unpredictable circuits.
Spa-Francorchamps, with its long straights and weather-sensitive layout, traditionally favours high-downforce, reliable machinery. Starting tenth will place Norris significantly adrift of the frontrunners heading into Friday practice, though his racecraft and the MCL40’s recent performance improvements offer hope for a recovery drive on Sunday. The penalty also reignites questions over McLaren’s electronics reliability — a critical vulnerability in an otherwise competitive package at a circuit where overtaking remains possible but never guaranteed.
Norris has been vocal about his confidence to beat any team-mate this season, but electronic gremlins continue to threaten his World Championship defence.
