Serena Williams talks Miami Grand Prix experience and friendship with Lewis Hamilton

Share

Tennis star Serena Williams was present at the Miami Grand Prix paddock to support her close friend, Lewis Hamilton.

Post-race, she took to social media to share her race experience and detail her friendship with the Ferrari driver. The duo have been close friends for years and share mutual appreciation for each other’s sports and talent.

The race weekend has been pretty challenging for Hamilton, who failed to secure a desirable position in both the Sprint and final race to get himself and his team some points. The sprint ended with him crossing the line in 7th place, bagging just two points. Moreover, in the final race, he qualified sixth and finished in the same place, not having advanced a position to secure better points.

Williams on the Miami Grand Prix and meeting Lewis Hamilton

Williams took to social media to reveal that she enjoyed hanging out with the Ferrari drivers, Hamilton and Charles Leclerc. Mentioning that she did have a wish to meet the Briton back in the days, she said, “I remember wanting to meet Lewis Hamilton because he was this amazing Black driver winning in England at the same time that Venus Williams or I were winning at Wimbledon. I felt like we had to meet.” She said that they met then, and whenever any of them won, they celebrated together. Though many years have passed, she still considers Hamilton very close and regards him as a brother.

This is not the first time Williams has spoken so fondly of Hamilton; earlier this year, she lauded his championship mindset and reaffirmed their close bond. Being appreciative of the 7-time world champion, she elaborated, “I love that guy, he’s a really good friend of mine. The guy is such a champion; he has such a champion’s mindset. I look at what he does in training, and physically, his job is… There are really no words for it, to be honest.”

Williams once sparked controversy over Hamilton’s title remarks

The controversy sparked in 2023, when Mercedes boss Toto Wolff took to social media to express his “anger and drive” to make Lewis Hamilton win an 8th title. He mentioned that Hamilton should have gotten his 8th title, but now that he hasn’t, they want to make sure that it happens sooner.

He said that they want to look ahead and learn from the past, while attempting their best for another title. The tennis legend instantly took to his comment section to make a remark that received mixed responses from the F1 community.

She wrote, “He should have had 9 already. But…lemme be quiet.” This also reignited the debate that has been going on since the day Max Verstappen won the title in Abu Dhabi in 2021, snatching Hamilton’s 8th, which, to date, many consider wasn’t fair.
