Helmut Marko backs Nikola Tsolov over Liam Lawson for 2027 Racing Bulls seat

Helmut Marko believes Racing Bulls should choose Nikola Tsolov over Liam Lawson for the 2027 F1 season as uncertainty continues over the team’s driver line-up.

The former Red Bull adviser has backed Tsolov to make the step up from Formula 2, despite Lawson producing a strong campaign for Racing Bulls in 2026. Speaking to Austrian newspaper Krone, Marko pointed to Red Bull’s long-standing philosophy of developing young drivers as the reason he would favour the Bulgarian.

“We don’t buy stars, we make stars,” Marko said, quoting the philosophy of late Red Bull founder Dietrich Mateschitz.

Marko favours Tsolov in Racing Bulls decision

Marko described the choice between Lawson and Tsolov as a difficult one but believes Red Bull’s traditional approach should ultimately count in the younger driver’s favour. Tsolov has emerged as one of the leading prospects within Red Bull’s junior system and is pushing for an opportunity to make his Formula 1 debut in 2027.

Lawson, meanwhile, has strengthened his case to remain on the grid with his performances this season, but his future with Racing Bulls has yet to be confirmed. The New Zealander has already experienced an eventful spell within the Red Bull set-up, having previously been promoted to the senior team before returning to Racing Bulls.

No final decision has been announced over the team’s 2027 line-up, and Marko’s comments represent his own view rather than confirmation of Racing Bulls’ plans. However, his backing of Tsolov adds another element to the debate as Red Bull considers how best to place its emerging talent next season.
