Bahrain signs new long-term deal through to 2036

The Bahrain Grand Prix will remain on the Formula 1 calendar until at least 2036 after striking a new long-term deal.

F1 has raced at the Sakhir International Circuit since 2004, with the track becoming renowned for providing some great racing over the years.

To celebrate its 10-year anniversary in 2014, the event transitioned into a night race in a move that has proved universally popular with drivers and fans.

Bahrain held two grand prix’s on separate configurations in 2020 as the global pandemic heavily impacted F1’s schedule, with its short circuit proving a major hit.

In a statement issued on Friday, F1 announced it had agreed a contract extension with Bahrain’s promoters that will see the series continue to race at the Sakhir circuit through to 2036.

“I am delighted we will be racing at the Bahrain International Circuit until 2036 where more incredible racing and excitement will be on show to thrill our fans,” said F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali.

“Since 2004 we have had some fantastic races in Sakhir and we cannot wait to be back there for the start of the 2022 championship as we begin a new era for the sport.

“Bahrain was the first country in the Middle East to welcome Formula 1 and it has a very special place in our sport, and I personally want to thank HRH Prince Salman and his team for their dedication and hard work throughout our partnership and look forward to the many years of racing ahead of us.”

Chief executive of the Bahrain International Circuit Sheikh Salman bin Isa Al Khalifa added: “After 18 years of F1 racing, we are proud to have played a part in F1’s rich history and we now looking forward to continuing to build on that heritage well into the future.
