Raikkonen trials new F1 halo device

Kimi Raikkonen has become the first driver to test the proposed ‘halo’ cockpit design during day three of the second test at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya.

Raikkonen ran the device for one installation lap before it was removed.

The improvement of cockpit safety has been at the forefront of the FIA’s minds since the death of Jules Bianchi at the 2014 Japanese Grand Prix. The proposed design also would have prevented Felipe Massa’s accident in 2009 from occurring.

The FIA announced last week following the Strategy Group and F1 Commission meetings in Geneva, that they plan to introduce some sort of head protection for the 2017 season.

Raikkonen confirmed after running the device the visibility ”was not that bad”.
