Kimi Antonelli left Silverstone with his championship lead intact, but the British Grand Prix turned from a likely Mercedes control race into a warning shot for the second half of the season.
The Italian started from pole after a dominant Saturday, only for Ferrari to seize the race early and Charles Leclerc to win a chaotic 52-lap contest. Formula 1’s official classification put Leclerc first, George Russell second and Lewis Hamilton third, while Antonelli was classified 16th after a late technical failure wrecked his points return.
Mercedes escape with damage limited
The critical number is now 25. Antonelli remains top of the drivers’ standings on 179 points, but Russell’s second place moved him to 154 and cut the gap sharply. That matters because Silverstone had looked like Antonelli’s weekend after his sprint win and pole position, covered in our British GP pole report.
Instead, Mercedes were forced into mitigation mode. Russell banked 18 points, but Antonelli’s non-score allowed Ferrari to turn a pace threat into a title-pressure moment. Leclerc’s win, detailed in our Silverstone race report, also pulled Ferrari closer in a constructors’ fight still led by Mercedes.
Formula 1’s standings show Mercedes on 333 points, Ferrari on 255 and McLaren on 179. That cushion is still substantial, but Silverstone proved one failure can make even the fastest package look vulnerable.
