Haas have signed Formula 2 championship leader Rafael Câmara on a multi-year deal to race in Formula 1 from 2027.
The 21-year-old Brazilian will replace Esteban Ocon, who is leaving Haas at the end of this season. Câmara becomes the first rookie confirmed on the 2027 F1 grid. A member of the Ferrari Driver Academy since 2022, Câmara currently leads the F2 championship for Invicta Racing with two rounds remaining.
His promotion follows successive title-winning seasons. Câmara won the Formula Regional European Championship in 2024 before taking the Formula 3 crown as a rookie in 2025.
Câmara gets Haas F1 chance
Haas considered several drivers before choosing Câmara, with reigning F2 champion Leonardo Fornaroli and reserve drivers Jack Doohan and Ryo Hirakawa among those evaluated by the team. Câmara had become the favourite for the seat after taking the F2 championship lead in Azerbaijan, having already attracted Haas’ attention with his performances in the junior categories.
Team principal Ayao Komatsu had previously said outright speed would be the first requirement when Haas chose its 2027 driver, alongside someone capable of working closely with the team. Câmara’s move also maintains a route from the Ferrari Driver Academy into Haas. Oliver Bearman followed the same path before becoming a full-time F1 driver with the American team in 2025.
Ocon confirmed last month that he would leave Haas after two seasons, although the Frenchman said he remained determined to continue his F1 career. Haas have yet to formally confirm Bearman for next season, but the Briton is expected to remain with the team and partner Câmara in 2027.
