Sebastian Vettel and Valtteri Bottas headline inaugural Wellington Race of Champions

Four-time Formula 1 world champion Sebastian Vettel will headline the inaugural Race of Champions at Wellington’s Hnry Stadium next January.

Cadillac grand prix driver Valtteri Bottas will join the German for the New Zealand asphalt stadium event. The two-day knockout meeting begins on 9 January 2027.

Equal Machinery Tests Driving Talent

The unique crossover format forces competitors to race in identical cars. This strips away the technical superiority of Formula 1 machinery, pitting circuit racers directly against multi-discipline specialists.

Vettel and Bottas will face World Rally Championship event winner Hayden Paddon and Supercars driver Chaz Mostert. Removing aerodynamic advantages creates a pure test of adaptability, requiring quick adjustments much like drivers finding grip at the Madrid street track.

Vettel has taken six Nations’ Cup victories and one individual crown since his event debut. Speaking to motorsport.com, he confirmed his eagerness to race at the venue.

“I am really looking forward to competing against so many other champions from across the globe at the Race Of Champions in Wellington in January, and getting a chance to visit more of New Zealand,” Vettel said.

Wellington Track Construction Begins Soon

A temporary tarmac circuit will be constructed inside the stadium to host the head-to-head heats.

International grids are steadily finalising their future talent, as seen when Audi secured an Invicta seat for 2027. In Wellington, organisers will announce further local and international stars to complete the 16-driver roster.

General admission tickets for the historic motorsport meeting will be available on 22 September.
