Audi Driver Development Programme prospect Freddie Slater will graduate to the Formula 2 grid for the 2027 season with back-to-back title winners Invicta Racing. The 18-year-old secured his promotion following an impressive rookie Formula 3 campaign. He missed the championship by just 14 points to Ugo Ugochukwu. Slater amassed eight podium finishes, three pole positions and a single feature race victory across the year.
Structured Path Towards Formula 1
Audi has strategically placed its leading junior prospect within a proven winning environment. Invicta Racing claimed consecutive drivers’ and teams’ championships across 2024 and 2025. The move underlines a deliberate ladder strategy from the manufacturer to prepare drivers for its Formula 1 project. Slater consistently demonstrated impressive racecraft throughout the year. This skill proved highly valued following the overtaking difficulties observed during the inaugural F3 sprint race.
Rapid Progression Through Junior Categories
The British driver has enjoyed a meteoric rise since claiming the 2023 Ginetta Junior Championship. He secured both the Italian and UAE Formula 4 titles in 2024. He then won the Formula Regional European Championship in 2025. Speaking to formula1.com, Slater noted his growth. “I learned a lot in Formula 3 this season, and I feel I have developed as a driver and as a person over the course of the year.”
Preparing For Next Season
Audi Driver Development Programme director Allan McNish told fiaformula2.com that Invicta provides the perfect platform. “The move to Formula 2 is the natural next step for Freddie, and an important new phase of his development as a driver.” Slater will integrate with Invicta Racing over the winter break. Meanwhile, the current Formula 2 grid is preparing for an unprecedented Saturday race format at the upcoming Azerbaijan Grand Prix.
