Formula 1 will stage an unprecedented Sprint weekend on the narrow streets of Monaco as part of an expanded 24-race calendar for the 2027 season.
Commercial Metrics Overtake Circuit Limitations
The decision to introduce short-form racing to the Principality highlights a shift towards broadcast targets over realistic overtaking potential. With Monte Carlo notoriously lacking passing zones, management will leverage two separate qualifying sessions to maximise Saturday television ratings.
According to a statement published by motorsport.com, the expansion serves financial and broadcasting goals. Series officials announced: “Due to the continued success and strong demand for the format, the number of Sprint events has increased from six to ten for 2027, delivering even more competitive action across the season for fans, promoters, broadcasters, and partners.”
Expanded Ten Race Sprint Schedule
Bahrain, Australia, Japan, and Abu Dhabi will also debut the revised weekend structure. The schedule features the return of Portugal’s Portimao circuit and Turkey’s Istanbul Park. Meanwhile, as rally factions prepare for an unrestricted drivers’ war, the premier motorcycle paddock is also cementing future grids with Tech3 KTM completing the incoming grid.
The FIA maintains the schedule delivers on sporting grounds despite driver concerns regarding track suitability. Speaking to Sky Sports, governing body president Mohammed Ben Sulayem said: “With 24 Grands Prix across five continents, the return of Portugal and Turkey, and the opportunity for an expanded Sprint programme, the calendar combines tradition, innovation, and fan engagement while maintaining the highest sporting standards.”
Pre-season testing begins in Bahrain on 24 February.
