Reigning 2025 champion Kyle Larson snapped a 51-race winless streak by winning the chaotic Enjoy Illinois 300 at WWT Raceway in double overtime.
The Hendrick Motorsports driver led Alex Bowman across the line for a team 1-2 finish. Larson, who recently revealed a new Las Vegas tribute scheme, paced 80 laps to secure his 33rd career victory.
Brake Failures Decimate Playoff Field
The race set a track and 2026 season record with 18 cautions and two red flags. Severe brake rotor failures wreaked havoc across the championship contenders. Ryan Blaney, Chase Elliott, and Chase Briscoe all crashed out following sudden brake loss. Following a scary pit lane pileup earlier in the weekend, Sunday’s main event proved equally demanding.
HEAVY noted the eventual winner “survived” the afternoon.
“I had a good feeling,” Larson told motorsport.com. “I mean, you never know. I felt like this place is so weird. Obviously with the brake rotor failure, strategy, all that.”
Hendrick Dominates Overtime Restart
During the final caution, Larson asked teammate William Byron not to push Joey Logano. Byron obliged, allowing Bowman to secure second place.
“How about Hendrick Motorsports,” Larson added to motorsport.com. “Alex Bowman, can’t ask for a better teammate than him. Gave me the pushes I needed to get clear. Want to dedicate this win to him, and his dog just passed away a couple days ago.”
The victory elevates Larson to second in the Chase standings, trailing Denny Hamlin by just nine points.
