2025 world champion Lando Norris claimed a spectacular pole position for McLaren at the Madring street circuit during the inaugural Spanish Grand Prix. He snatched the front spot by just 0.011 seconds over championship leader Kimi Antonelli, despite missing almost all of second practice with a gearbox failure.
High Stakes At Madring
Norris currently trails Antonelli by 96 points with ten rounds remaining. However, team principal Zak Brown believes the tight layout offers a vital tactical advantage.
Speaking to formula1.com, Brown insisted the gap can be closed. “It’s definitely possible I think. I can only speak for McLaren, until it’s not possible, it’s possible,” he said.
The high-degradation venue makes overtaking exceptionally difficult, placing immense value on grid placement. These narrow margins at the front mirror the fierce Mercedes internal title fight defining the current season.
Tactical Battle Looms Large
Norris admitted the final qualifying lap was an immense challenge. “I am shocked and a little bit surprised to be here now but my God, it was probably one of the best laps I have done, ever in my career so very, very happy, very proud, very happy for the team,” he told The National.
McLaren’s rapid technical recovery showcases a broader resilience seen across motorsport this weekend, similar to Elfyn Evans defending second at Rally Chile.
Sunday’s 57-lap race now presents Norris with a critical opportunity to erode Antonelli’s massive championship advantage.
