Defending Formula 1 world champion Lando Norris has framed the 2026 title race as an exclusive Mercedes contest ahead of the inaugural Spanish Grand Prix.
Kimi Antonelli currently leads the drivers’ standings ahead of team-mate George Russell and Ferrari’s Lewis Hamilton. With Mercedes holding a dominant constructors’ lead, rival competitors are effectively conceding the outright crown.
Speaking to Formula1.com, Norris admitted McLaren cannot mount a sustained challenge across varied track layouts.
“It’s just, like I said, not as good as it needs to be everywhere. And the only person that has a car that’s the same as Kimi is George. So I wish George the best in trying to fight Kimi,” he said.
This dynamic allows Toto Wolff to oversee an internal duel while safely shifting Mercedes’ budget allocation and development focus. McLaren’s free racing policy proved insufficient to bridge the gap, and following his retracted radio comments in Italy, Norris is turning his attention entirely to Madrid.
Madrid Street Circuit Debut
The new Spanish layout presents an extreme technical test, forcing teams into stark aerodynamic compromises.
“I think the whole track is quite challenging with how the corners are laid out — uphill, downhill, off-camber, camber,” Norris added.
Initial practice begins on Friday as the grid navigates the demanding new street circuit.
