Charles Leclerc claimed second position during Friday practice at the inaugural Spanish Grand Prix, finishing a fraction of a second behind Mercedes championship leader Kimi Antonelli.
The Ferrari driver utilised his proven street circuit pedigree around the demanding Madring layout, outpacing teammate Lewis Hamilton by just 0.036 seconds. With the new 22-corner venue featuring unforgiving walls, engineers face an urgent setup dilemma.
Overtaking simulations proved futile on Friday, forcing teams to prioritise one-lap mechanical grip over long-run race trim. Rather than imposing strict team orders, Ferrari have tailored their SF-26 machines for maximum Saturday performance.
Ferrari Prioritise Single Lap Pace
“Qualifying is for sure going to be the key moment of the weekend,” Leclerc told motorsport.com.
He noted that following rivals closely was effectively impossible on the Spanish tarmac.
The Monegasque added: “because particularly in FP2, I tried to overtake, but even with the large pace delta, it was extremely difficult or impossible to overtake.”
Track evolution will remain a vital factor ahead of Q3. Leclerc confirmed this layout demands total precision.
“There’s still a lot of work to be done, and I expect it to be one of the most challenging qualifying sessions of the year, being such a commitment track,” he added.
The Scuderia’s aggressive single-lap focus arrives amid a festive home atmosphere, highlighted by a bespoke crash helmet for official race ambassador Carlos Sainz.
Drivers return to the track for final practice before Saturday afternoon’s decisive qualifying hour.
