Motorsport Talking Points & Facts – 11th July 2026

Sachsenring race weekend, a Goodwood coronation and a Red Bull driver market that keeps growing new branches — Saturday 11 July asked a lot of ReadMotorsport’s rolling coverage, and by the time the paddock lights dimmed in Germany the site had published seven stories chasing seven separate threads.

None of it was small. MotoGP’s title contenders spent the day sorting themselves into winners and walking wounded ahead of Sunday’s German Grand Prix, Lando Norris took a title-winning Formula 1 car up a hill in front of his home crowd, and the Max Verstappen situation at Red Bull added a second layer when a Haas junior’s name entered the conversation as a contingency plan.

The pace never let up. By mid-afternoon UK time, MotoGP had already delivered a lockout, a crash and a sprint result; by early evening, Goodwood had staged its Saturday centrepiece; and by 10pm, the paddock rumour mill had produced a story most fans would not have predicted twelve hours earlier — Red Bull “keeping very close tabs” on a Ferrari-contracted driver as insurance against losing a four-time World Champion. If a backup plan for Verstappen is already being sketched out in July, what does that say about how close to the edge this Red Bull–Verstappen relationship really is?

What Happened At The Sachsenring On MotoGP’s Sprint Saturday?

Marc Marquez controlled Sachsenring qualifying from start to finish, sealing his third pole of the season and leading an all-Ducati front row alongside brother Alex Marquez and VR46’s Fabio Di Giannantonio, as detailed in ReadMotorsport’s qualifying report. The session turned serious when Aprilia’s Marco Bezzecchi suffered a heavy highside crash at Turn 7 and was taken to the circuit medical centre.

Marquez then backed up the pole with victory in the 15-lap Sprint, holding off his brother and Di Giannantonio to close to within 32 points of championship leader Jorge Martin, according to ReadMotorsport’s sprint report. Di Giannantonio’s podium leaves him 13 points off the top with the summer break approaching. Bezzecchi, meanwhile, was ruled out of the rest of the German Grand Prix weekend after scans confirmed a fractured collarbone, with surgery required in Italy this week.

It was a weekend to forget for Francesco Bagnaia. The two-time champion missed a direct route into Q2, ending final practice 0.738 seconds off team-mate Marquez, and told Crash.net his rear-grip problems have left him feeling like he is “doing flat track” rather than racing a MotoGP bike — as covered in ReadMotorsport’s analysis of his Sachsenring slump.

Why Is Nicolo Bulega Closing In On A MotoGP Move?

Away from the Sachsenring, World Superbike championship leader Nicolo Bulega used Friday’s practice at Donington to confirm his long-chased MotoGP move with VR46 is close to being finalised for 2027. Per ReadMotorsport’s report, Bulega is understood to have moved past an initial one-plus-one contract proposal and is closing in on a two-year deal through 2028, with the Italian tipped to inherit Franco Morbidelli’s garage at the Valentino Rossi-owned squad.

How Did Lando Norris Spend His Goodwood Saturday?

While engines screamed in Germany, Britain’s newest Formula 1 World Champion took centre stage at the Goodwood Festival of Speed. Norris drove the 2023 McLaren MCL60 — the car in which he claimed seven podiums — up the hill to Goodwood House, only the 11th British driver to make the run as a reigning champion, as ReadMotorsport detailed. It capped a weekend that began on Friday sharing the spotlight with MotoGP legend Valentino Rossi.

Is Max Verstappen’s Red Bull Future Really In Doubt?

The biggest storyline of the day did not come from a track at all. Oscar Piastri’s manager Mark Webber moved on Friday to shut down speculation linking his driver to Verstappen’s Red Bull seat, telling RACER that “talk of him agitating to leave is nonsense” — a story ReadMotorsport covered in full. Yet just hours later, a second angle emerged: Sky Sports F1’s David Croft revealed Red Bull are “keeping very close tabs” on Haas driver Oliver Bearman as a contingency option, with team principal Laurent Mekies — who signed Bearman to the Ferrari Academy — seen as the link, according to ReadMotorsport’s report.

Nothing is confirmed on either front, but the two stories together show a driver market with more moving parts than at any point since Verstappen’s exit clause became active after his British Grand Prix DNF.

What Else Moved In Motorsport On Saturday?

The World Endurance Championship added its own Saturday drama at Interlagos, where Will Stevens put the #12 Cadillac Hertz Team JOTA on pole for Sunday’s Six Hours of São Paulo, edging the sister #38 Cadillac by just 0.048 seconds to lock out the front row, according to RacingNews365’s qualifying report. Championship leader and reigning Le Mans winner, the #7 Ferrari, could only manage 16th on the grid.
