Rumour: Hamilton to drop retirement bombshell at Silverstone

Share

Rumours are circulating about Lewis Hamilton making a potential career-related announcement at Silverstone towards the end of the season, which many fans are not ready to hear.

Across his over a decade career, Hamilton has been a part of prominent teams like McLaren and Mercedes, winning titles, showcasing iconic racecraft, and breaking several records.

However, in 2024, he decided to switch to Ferrari, a team he had dreamt of being part of since childhood. While many speculated that a title in red would be great for the 7-time world champion to close off his F1 journey, his debut year turned out to be disastrous, so much so that he wasn’t even able to secure a podium.

However, 2026, which marks the new era of F1, gave him a glimpse of hope, as he stood on the podium in red for the first time at the Chinese Grand Prix. While the struggle with SF-26 persists on several occasions, he nevertheless stands in the top 5 of the championship battle.

What’s the rumour about Hamilton’s retirement?

In a conversation on the NOS-F1 podcast, journalist Louis Dekker claims that Hamilton might announce his retirement at his home race, Silverstone, where he has won 9 times in his career. He revealed that Ferrari is “disappointing”, given they aren’t able to match the competitiveness on the grid, despite having good starts.

He thinks that McLaren struck back again in terms of developments and is giving much better competition. “I’d be willing to bet on it. I think Hamilton will announce his retirement at Silverstone at the end of this season,” he said.

Dutch racing driver Jeroen Bleekemolen echoed similar thoughts, saying that Hamilton might make a decision sooner or later, but he thinks that he might already have, as the Ferrari struggles continue.

Hamilton’s thoughts on retirement and possible replacements

The rumours may or may not be true, but it’s a pattern that F1 fans have witnessed consistently: whenever an experienced driver struggles, the retirement speculations emerge out of nowhere. And with Hamilton, this topic has been constant since last year when he experienced significant disappointment in his new team.

However, in an interview, when asked during the season closure, Hamilton had an answer for everyone who wanted him to hang his helmet. “I wouldn’t say anything to them. None of them has done what I’ve done, so they don’t know anything more than I do,” he said to those speculating about his retirement.

Moreover, he also set the record straight that he still has a dream that he constantly works towards and which keeps him motivated to stay in sport for some more years (via RacingNews365).

Hamilton’s contract runs through the 2027 season. If he retires before or after that, a possible replacement could be Oliver Bearman, who has been working hard to deliver strong performances, improve consistently, and catch Ferrari’s attention to be considered for the seat, as he stated earlier.
