Britain’s motorsport governing body Motorsport UK has banned Russian drivers from competing in UK-based events, a decision that prevents Nikita Mazepin from driving at this year’s British Grand Prix.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, Motorsport UK announced it would not allow drivers that hold a Russian or Belarusian license from taking part in national events.
It has also banned any teams or officials of Russian or Belarusian descent from entry or participation, and has clamped down on Russian/Belarusian national symbols, colours, or flags from being displayed at UK sanctioned competitions.
The decision comes just a day after the FIA confirmed Russian drivers will be allowed to enter international events, but can only race under an ‘FIA flag’.
David Richards, who is the chair of Motorsport UK, said it was important to acknowledge the International Olympic Committee’s recommendations and take a stand amid the Russia’s ongoing invasion of Ukraine.
“The entire Motorsport UK community condemns the acts of war by Russia and Belarus in Ukraine and expresses its solidarity and support towards all those affected by the ongoing conflict,” Richards said.
“We stand united with the people of Ukraine and the motorsport community following the invasion and the unacceptable actions that have unfolded.
“This is a time for the international motorsport community to act and show support for the people of Ukraine and our colleagues at the Federation Automobile d’Ukraine (FAU).”
He added: “It is our duty to use whatever influence and leverage we might have to bring this wholly unjustified invasion of Ukraine to a halt.
“We would encourage the motorsport community and our colleagues around the world to fully embrace the recommendations of the International Olympic Committee and do whatever we can to end this war.”
Motorsport UK’s announcement means Haas F1 driver Mazepin would not be able to compete at the British GP on July 3.
The Russian’s future at the American-owned team is currently under review, with a decision expected in the coming days.
