Takaaki Nakagami took victory in the Moto2 race at Silverstone, as Alex Marquez crashed out to leave his championship hopes hanging by a thread.
Nakagami rounded out a week in which he signed a contract with LCR Honda in style, beating out Franco Morbidelli to take his first win of the season. Morbidelli would eventually finish third, with his teammate Marquez crashing out of the race.
The Spaniard’s championship hopes now look very slim. Marquez would need to rely on others not finishing for him to make up ground in the championship with only a few races remaining on the calendar.
It would be Nakagami’s race, with Mattia Pasini finishing in second. Morbidelli was third, with his championship rival Tom Luthi coming home fourth.
Francesco Bagnaia was fifth, with Simone Corsi sixth. Stefano Manzi, who made his sensational Moto3 debut at Silverstone last season, finished in seventh place. Miguel Oliveria was eighth with teammate Brad Binder finishing in ninth.
Dominique Aegerter was tenth, in front of Luca Marini and Xavi Vierge. Jorge Navarro finished in thirteenth place.
The Moto2 riders will return in two weeks time for the San Marino GP at Misano.
