Prema Powerteam’s Callum Ilott has taken his first European Formula 3 win since the Hungaroring round in June.
Ilott inherited pole position after a series of penalties mixed up the grid for the second race of the weekend. He managed to pull away from Jake Hughes in second on the opening lap, only for the safety car to bunch up the field after Pedro Piquet and Joey Mawson collided.
A strong restart allowed Ilott to pull away from Hughes. He finished more than seven seconds ahead of the Hitech GP driver to keep his championship battle alive.
Hughes finished second, comfortably ahead of Lando Norris in third.
Norris lost pole position after a penalty for not slowing sufficiently for yellow flags in qualifying yesterday. He built up a small gap to Newey in fourth to take the final step on the podium. Third was enough to put him a single point ahead of Maximilian Gunther in the championship standings.
Newey took fourth ahead of David Beckmann.
Ferdinand Habsburg – another driver handed a two place penalty for not slowly sufficiently for yellow flags – held off attacks from Gunther to finish sixth.
Third in the championship Joel Eriksson finished outside the points in 12th but is more than 30 points ahead of Ilott in the title fight.
Guan Yu Zhou, Mick Schumacher, and Ralf Aron rounded out the top 10.
