Habsburg takes first F3 race win at Spa

Ferdinand Habsburg took his first European Formula 3 win in the second race at Spa.

The Carlin driver climbed up from eighth on the grid to take victory ahead of championship contender Joel Eriksson, who enjoyed his own fight up from 12th.

Habsburg jumped up to sixth on the opening lap, the retirement of Guanyu Zhou and Lando Norris following a collision helping him move up through the order.

Ralf Aron, after a difficult race one, dropped down through the order again, promoting Habsburg to fifth and onto the back of the battle for second.

Callum Ilott and Maximilian Gunther had overtaken pole sitter Norris before the opening lap incident. Gunther took the race lead from Ilott and put in a fastest lap to try to build up a gap, whilst a mistake from Ilott allowed Jake Hughes, Jehan Daruvala, and Habsburg to catch up.

Ilott was briefly able to retake the lead, only for Gunther to use the slip stream from running behind to move ahead. A lap later, Habsburg did the same.

Late in the race, Habsburg found his way past Gunther, and quickly set about putting a gap between himself and the battle for second.

Joel Eriksson, who had been mimicking Habsburg’s climb after starting 12th, moved past Gunther to snatch second and keep his championship fight alive.

Gunther finished third, ahead of Hughes and the battling Nikita Mazepin and Jehan Daruvala.

Ilott fell back to seventh, just ahead of Aron.

Mick Schumacher took ninth from Joey Mawson on the final lap.
