Hyman claims maiden GP3 victory at Austrian sprint

Campos Racing’s Raoul Hyman has become the eighth different winner in the last eight GP3 races after taking victory in the sprint at Austria’s Red Bull Ring.

Hyman led all 18 laps from pole position to claim his first win since triumphing at Snetterton in the BRDC Formula 4 series in 2014.

He held off late pressure from Ferrari junior Giuliano Alesi – son of ex-F1 driver Jean – to win by 0.9 seconds. It is his first podium in racing since the Navarra round of the French F4 championship in 2015.

ART’s Honda protege Nirei Fukuzumi claimed his third podium in four races in 2017 after making a move on Ryan Tveter on the penultimate lap.

Fukuzumi now retakes the Drivers’ Championship lead by one point after George Russell’s short stint ahead following the feature event.

Other ART drivers, Renault-backed Jack Aitken, Mercedes’ Russell, and Anthoine Hubert were fifth, sixth and seventh respectively.

Alessio Lorandi completed the race in the final points place in eighth after a dramatic crash with Dorian Boccolacci with one lap remaining.

Boccolacci made contact with his rear, going airborne, before flipping three times in the gravel at Turn 4. The Frenchman got out his car in normal fashion after the incident.

Kevin Joerg and Marcos Siebert completed the top-10, with the Argentinian finishing 15.8s adrift of Hyman.

Sauber’s Tatiana Calderon was 12th ahead of Haas development driver Santino Ferrucci. Haas’ Arjun Maini was the final classified driver in 16th.

Bruno Baptista was the only retirement of the race after being involved in a dramatic incident at Turn 10, going airborne over kerbs, with the front of his car jumping in the air violently.

The Brazilian made it back to the pitlane but was nursing the right-hand side of his back after getting out of his car.
