Russell takes first GP3 win in Austrian feature

Mercedes junior driver George Russell dominated to take his first GP3 win in the feature race at Austria’s Red Bull Ring.

Russell led all 24 laps on his way to winning after holding off an attack from Jack Aitken at the start, forcing his fellow Brit to the right-hand side of the straight.

Renault-backed Aitken finished 2.3 seconds adrift of his team-mate to claim his seventh podium in his last 10 GP3 races, and first for ART.

Honda protege Nirei Fukuzumi came from 10th on the grid to be classified third after Anthoine Hubert was demoted from third with a 10-second time penalty.

Hubert was deemed to be at fault for an opening lap clash with Arden duo Leonardo Pulcini and Steijn Schothorst.

The Frenchman tried to get past both at Turn 2 but hit the right-hand side of Pulcini, who hit Schothorst. Both later retired from the race.

This result is the first time that ART has finished with a 1-2-3 result since the same feature event 12 months’ ago.

Ryan Tveter and Ferrari academy racer – and son of former F1 driver Jean – Giuliano Alesi claimed personal-best finishes in fifth and sixth after a frenetic finale involving many drivers swapping positions.

Alessio Lorandi and Raoul Hyman got past Dorian Boccolacci late on as the Italian fell from third on the grid to ninth.

Hyman is set to start tomorrow’s sprint race on pole after placing in the lucrative eighth-place position.

Haas development driver Arjun Maini inherited 10th after Sauber’s Tatiana Calderon and DAMS team-mate Bruno Baptista were both given five-second penalties for overtaking under yellow flags.

Calderon and Baptista were classified 13th and 14th as the last drivers still on the lead lap.

Russell moves into the lead of the Drivers’ Championship after three races with 49 points, five clear of Fukuzumi.
