Prema on top in Monza free practice

Prema Powerteam enjoyed a one-two in free practice ahead of the Monza European Formula Three weekend. Callum Ilott finished top, less than a tenth of a second faster than team-mate Maximilian Gunther.

The pair’s team-mates, Guan Yu Zhou and Mick Schumacher, finished a little further down the order, 16th and 17th. Schumacher in 17th was still within a second of Ilott in P1, with only Keyvan Andres Soori and David Beckmann more than a second slower than the Brit.

Lando Norris started the day on a high, finishing FP1 fastest with a time of 1m45.351s. Though he improved his time in the second session, it wasn’t enough to challenge the Prema duo. He ended FP2 fourth fastest, behind team-mate and fellow rookie Jehan Daruvala.

Hitech’s Nikita Mazepin finished free practice nearly six tenths of a second slower than Ilott, rounding off the top five. 2016 rookie champion Joel Eriksson took P6.

Jake Dennis, who impressed at Silverstone, struggled a little more in free practice. The Brit was 15th fastest in FP1, but improved to seventh in the second session.

Harrison Newey, the fastest Van Amersfoort driver, ended practice eighth.

Marino Sato and Ralf Aron completed the top ten.
