Harrison Newey hopes to repeat his race one climb through the field in this weekend’s two remaining European Formula 3 races.
The Van Amersfoort driver started 16th, but finished the race sixth after 16 laps and multiple safety car appearances. The damp track at the start of the race caught some drivers off guard and led to three retirements.
“I think the rain definitely helped us out,” Newey told Read Motorsport after the race. “We’re hoping for more overnight.”
Newey had climbed into the top 10 by the end of the fourth lap. By the end of lap 10, he’d emerged on top in the battle for sixth and managed to pull away from Mick Schumacher and Guan Yu Zhou.
“I got into a steady position,” he said. “I was too far away over the last couple of laps to catch Joel [Eriksson], but too far in front of Mick so I just backed off. It was still slippery out there, but I kept my place and it went alright.”
Rain is expected overnight, but weather predictions suggest a dry race, meaning it might be a little harder for Newey to make quite as much progress in race two tomorrow.
