So the season has come to a close and we have ourselves a brand new World Champion! The Abu Dhabi Grand Prix is packed with excitement and glamour; everything that makes Formula One. I was more nervous yesterday than I have been for a race in a very long time. Most of this was down to Lewis Hamilton’s choice to push Nico Rosberg back toward Max Verstappen and Sebastian Vettel in the closing laps of the race.
As soon as Vettel overtook Verstappen for third position the pressure on Rosberg seemed to double (as did my nerves)! Those last few laps were possibly the best laps of the entire year. For that reason, Sebastian Vettel is my Star Driver of the 2016 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.
The closer Vettel got to Rosberg the harder it became to look at the TV screen. In one shot we could see four drivers, each capable of winning the race and two of them were fighting for their championship title. There was a lot at stake!
Vettel closed his season on the final step of the podium and the joy he felt was clear when he lifted his trophy above his head. Yesterday was a day to remember. It was full of action and uncertainty. I don’t think a single person was relaxed during those last laps. It was simply incredible.
Vettel has reminded me of why he’s a key feature of the grid. He is quick, determined and unforgiving on the race track. He is a fierce driver who pushes until he achieves. He is a joy to watch.
Congratulations on finishing on the podium, Sebastian! I hope you appear there many more times next season!
