Red Bull junior Pierre Gasly stormed to a dominant victory at the Yas Marina Circuit as he now tops the GP2 series’ standings ahead of Prema teammate Antonio Giovinazzi.
The Frenchman dominated from the off and was aided by Sergey Sirotkin’s slow pace at the start.
Giovinazzi remained sixth off the start and struggled to make significant progress as Gasly pulled away from the rest of the pack.
A minor hold up from the pits did not stop Gasly’s charge as he goes for title.
Nobuharu Matsushita pitted with five laps to go and come out on the supersoft tyres. The Japanese managed to pass Sirotkin and Artem Markelov to come home second.
Norman Nato came home fifth on the circuit but was awarded a penalty for speeding in the pitlane dropping him behind Giovinazzi.
Johnny Cecotto and Alex Lynn took seventh and eighth, which means they will line-up on the front row for tomorrow’s sprint race. Nicholas Latifi and Raffaele Marciello rounded out the points paying positions.
