GP2: Lynn victorious in Spanish Sprint Race

Alex Lynn drove one of the best races of his career to win the Spanish sprint race for the second year in a row.

The British driver started the race from third, but made the most of Jordan King’s failed move on polesitter Raffaele Marciello through the first corner and got past his fellow countryman.

On lap four, Lynn eased past Marciello down into Turn 1. He then built a comfortable buffer to second place and looked untouchable all the way to the chequered flag.

In second place was Lynn’s former teammate Pierre Gasly who had started sixth but pulled some great moves in the opening five laps to move up to second place during the race.

Racing Engineering’s Jordan King earned his second GP2 podium with a third place finish ahead of Artem Markelov who got past his teammate Marciello on lap 12 and maintained that position till the finish.

Marciello struggled early on but found his feet in the second half of the race and came home fifth ahead of Oliver Rowland who made a late move on feature race runner-up Nicholas Latifi.

Sergio Canamasas ran in the points for the majority of the race but lost seventh to Oliver Rowland late on and the final points paying position to Matsushita.

Nobuharu Matsushita reported engine problems on the grid but got to the finish and scored a point via an eighth place finish.

Sergey Sirotkin came from 21st to finish an impressive 11th and was unlucky to come away from the opening weekend with zero points.

Sean Gelael was enjoying his best race in GP2 as he managed to keep his more experienced teammate Mitch Evans behind him much to the Kiwi’s frustration. However, he moved across on Antonio Giovinazzi under braking causing the Italian to fly off into the barrier at high speed.

The out of control Prema Racing car ended Arthur Pic’s race as well. Fortunately, Giovinazzi got out of the car relatively unhurt although there is no guarantee he will be fit for Monaco.

Unsurprisingly, the race ended behind the safety car.

Yesterday’s feature race winner Norman Nato made a shocking start and fell from eighth to 19th on the opening lap and only made it up to 16th mainly benefiting from other drivers misfortunes.

Pierre Gasly takes the championship lead from Nato and leads by six points from the Racing Engineering driver. Lynn is now third ahead of teammate Latifi and overtaking maestro Artem Markelov.
