GP2 Preview: The class of 2016

The class of 2016 promises a GP2 season full of action and surprises: The field is full of skilled drivers, and after the generational change of 2015, which saw the debut of many exciting fresh talents, the fight for the championship crown is wide open.

2016 will see the first GP2 appearances of six new drivers, among them promising GP3 graduates like Luca Ghiotto and Marvin Kirchhöfer and FIA Formula 3 runner-up Antonio Giovinazzi, who will be looking to proves themselves in the face of a new challenge.

The likes of ART GP duo Nobuharu Matsushita and Sergey Sirotkin, best rookie of 2015, now have a full year of experience under their belts and are ready improve even further after their impressive debuts. Others like Brit Alex Lynn and Frenchmen Arthur Pic and Pierre Gasly, who had only mixed results so far, will be trying their best to reach the full potential they have shown in the previous seasons and make it all come together.

Of course, the routiniers Mitch Evans and Raffaele Marciello still have things to prove as well: Both have not yet had the desired GP2 successes, and their years of experience might well put them ahead of hot-headed young guns.

Three cockpits are still free with only one day left until this year’s GP2 season kicks off, and it remains to be seen who will be joining the 21 drivers of 2016.
