Honda Replaces F1 Power Unit Leader Amid Aston Martin Struggles

Honda Racing Corporation is replacing power unit leader Tetsushi Kakuda with software specialist Yoichiro Fukao on 1 October following Aston Martin’s horrific Spanish Grand Prix weekend.

The squad lies tenth in the constructors’ standings with just three points. The new RA626H engine has endured extreme driveability and vibration problems since the opening round, prompting this management restructuring.

Software And Control Shift

Fukao brings extensive control system experience across both the premier single-seater category and MotoGP. His promotion suggests the persistent power delivery problems are rooted in software calibration rather than fundamental mechanical design.

Announcing the reshuffle, Honda released a statement published by motorsport.com calling the move a “planned transition” designed to “accelerate” development.

Fernando Alonso crossed the line a twice-lapped 17th at the Spanish Grand Prix. As reported by The Race, he complained that “the engine was very bad today, the boost control was difficult” after a miserable Sunday.

Upgrades Paused Until 2027

A specification update arrived at Zandvoort to address the worst vibrations. Trackside general manager Shintaro Orihara noted, “We have confirmed on dyno, so that was a positive thing we found,” according to RacingNews365.

However, further mechanical fixes will be delayed. Orihara admitted, “This is the only major update for this year,” clarifying that “The major update will be in 2027.”

Aston Martin will now rely on potential tweaks to the FIA ADUO concession system to salvage their remaining 2026 fixtures.
