Kimi Antonelli secured victory at the inaugural Spanish Grand Prix in Madrid, while Oscar Piastri endured a frustrating afternoon to finish eighth behind Franco Colapinto.
The McLaren driver saw his race pace compromised by a first-lap incident on the Madring street circuit. Adding to recent difficulties with early tyre strategic calls, Piastri was unable to mount a recovery drive.
Reigning 2025 world champion Lando Norris demonstrated race-winning speed before a poorly timed Virtual Safety Car ruined his strategy. Norris had built a six-second advantage over Antonelli before Lance Stroll retired his Aston Martin on lap 13.
Having secured a spectacular pole position on Saturday, Norris missed the cheap pitstop window by a matter of seconds.
Growing Gap To Team-Mate
The difference between the two McLaren drivers is becoming increasingly apparent across the 2026 season. While Norris consistently challenges for victories, Piastri has struggled to produce standout performances in identical machinery.
The Australian driver remains heavily overshadowed by his team-mate’s sustained front-running form.
Speaking to motorsport.com, Norris remained upbeat about his underlying pace: “We were too quick, that’s all it was.”
He later added over the team radio: “I’ll keep delivering.”
Piastri will seek to address this pace deficit when the Formula 1 paddock reconvenes for the next round of the championship.
