Chaz Mostert and Fabian Coulthard secured a historic debut endurance victory for the Toyota GR Supra during a chaotic AirTouch 500.
The Walkinshaw TWG Racing duo charged from 11th on the grid, navigating treacherous wet-to-dry conditions to lead a sensational 1-3 result for the manufacturer. Ryan Wood and Jaxon Evans finished third, putting an end to lingering doubts regarding the 500-kilometre durability of the new engine package. This immediate pace firmly disrupts the established Ford and Chevrolet hierarchy.
Disaster Alters Championship Narrative
Grove Racing secured second through Kai Allen and Tim Slade. However, the true shock came further down the order. A disastrous afternoon for former points leader Broc Feeney, whose co-driver Nick Percat suffered early spins and suspension damage, transformed the championship standings.
Feeney plummeted to 24th, handing the overall lead to Matt Payne, who now holds a 120-point advantage. Eight drivers, including Payne, Feeney, Allen, and Mostert, are officially locked into the Finals system.
As teams look ahead to Bathurst, the premium on a highly adaptable driving style is evident across the grid. Speaking to Motorsport.com, Mostert reflected on his breakthrough.
“The 500 has been kicking me for years and years, I have come so close so many times,” Mostert said.
Others must remain bullish on their chances as the season intensifies. The paddock next regroups for the Repco Bathurst 1000, commencing on 8 October.
