Defending 2025 Formula 1 world champion Lando Norris faces a critical mileage deficit at the inaugural Spanish Grand Prix following an early gearbox failure.
The McLaren driver completed just two laps during second practice at the new IFEMA Madring circuit.
This mechanical halt leaves Norris severely lacking long-run tyre data compared to championship rivals who logged extensive high-fuel simulation runs on the evolving street layout. McLaren technical director Mark Temple confirmed the mechanical fault to Formula1.com. He admitted the stoppage was “a big setback” for the British driver, noting the urgency of Saturday morning. Temple added: “Going into FP3 we’ll be trying to do as much as we can to give him back track time.”
Oscar Piastri Completes Full Programme
While Norris sat in the garage, his teammate Oscar Piastri executed a complete run plan to finish seventh overall.
The Australian gathered essential thermal degradation information, though he admitted outright performance remains elusive.
Discussing the compromised set-up demands, Piastri said: “I felt like we got a bit closer in FP2, which was good, but we’re still lacking a bit of pace it seems,” The lost track time forces McLaren to heavily condense their Saturday preparations.
This data deficit is particularly damaging as they assess their recent Madrid aero gamble. Maximising the final practice hour is now essential to rebuild a competitive baseline for Norris. A clean session will be vital to overcome the mounting pressure caused by the team’s free racing policy against an increasingly dominant Mercedes outfit.
