Red Bull secure Robin Raikkonen for 2027 junior driver academy

Red Bull have formally secured the 11-year-old son of 2007 world champion Kimi Raikkonen for their junior academy ahead of the Spanish Grand Prix in Madrid.

Robin will join the Milton Keynes development programme from 2027. This proactive academy rebuild arrives as senior leadership manages generational transitions, heavily highlighted by recent scrutiny surrounding Max Verstappen’s Red Bull future.

Nurturing Early Karting Prospects

The young Finn currently occupies second place in the Rotax Max Challenge Italia standings. Red Bull team principal Laurent Mekies plans to develop him without applying early systemic pressure.

Mekies told Formula1.com that the youngster “has already demonstrated exceptional ability in karting,” and praised his calm approach to racing.

His integration fits a storied academy legacy that produced Sebastian Vettel and Verstappen. The signing reflects how teams are locking down young talent earlier, similar to the accelerated pathways driving Kimi Antonelli’s rapid rise through the modern single-seater ranks.

Managing Expectations In Italy

The family relocated to Italy to facilitate the karting campaign. Speaking to PlanetF1 last year, Kimi maintained a measured outlook on his son’s trajectory.

“Everything is going nicely. We’ll see. If something comes or not, who knows? But he’s having fun – that’s the main thing,” he said.

The 11-year-old will conclude his current Italian karting season before undertaking his formal track programme next year.
