De la Rosa on how Aston Martin’s risky upgrades paid off

Pedro de la Rosa has credited Adrian Newey’s management structure for stabilising Aston Martin during their high-risk B-spec redesign rollout ahead of the Dutch Grand Prix.

The Silverstone outfit endured a bruising start to the campaign with reliability issues and a severe lack of pace. Rather than introducing minor reactive updates, the team committed to a comprehensive mid-season redesign.

Newey Redefines Team Principal Role

By splitting leadership duties, Newey concentrated on overarching car architecture while delegating trackside operations to Mike Krack. Speaking to Formula1.com, De la Rosa explained the dynamic.

“I must say that Team Principal is a title,” he noted. “It’s not a job description. Adrian has said it many times. We are fortunate in the team having Mike Krack as well, an experienced Team Principal, now chief track operations.”

This governance split allowed the squad to maintain internal harmony during their early-season drought. The unified front held firm even as external scrutiny intensified over Lance Stroll’s Q1 exit record, ensuring complete focus on their single-package approach. The stability stands in stark contrast to broader motorsport turbulence, where scheduling clashes recently saw a Nurburgring outing cancelled.

The bold strategy yielded immediate performance gains, lifting Fernando Alonso and the heavily revised Aston Martin ahead of Cadillac and Williams at the Hungaroring. Further progress followed when a new Honda power unit arrived at Zandvoort.

Aston Martin will now seek to extract maximum performance from their unified aerodynamic platform as the Formula 1 paddock reconvenes for the upcoming rounds.
