Pierre Gasly Claims Maiden F1 Pole At Italian Grand Prix

Pierre Gasly secured a sensational maiden Formula 1 pole position at the Italian Grand Prix by perfecting the slipstream game around Monza.

The Alpine driver clocked a 1m 21.786s on his final Q3 run, edging Mercedes’ George Russell by a mere 0.060 seconds. Gasly brilliantly utilised a tow from Ferrari’s Lewis Hamilton to leapfrog his rivals and claim the front slot.

McLaren Suffer Turn One Woes

While Russell benefited from a tactical slipstream provided by Mercedes team-mate and 2026 championship leader Kimi Antonelli, McLaren faced a disastrous final shootout. Defending 2025 world champion Lando Norris was left punching a hole in the air after Oscar Piastri went off at Turn 1.

The error ruined both their laps amid brake temperature struggles, leaving Norris stranded down in ninth.

Grid Penalties Scramble Starting Order

Antonelli qualified seventh but drops to the back of the grid following an engine penalty, elevating Alpine’s Franco Colapinto. Racing Bulls driver Arvid Lindblad also moves up the order.

Liam Lawson took a similar power unit drop and was eliminated in 13th, having been impeded by Piastri on his final effort. Ferrari watched their earlier practice pace evaporate, leaving Charles Leclerc and Hamilton to settle for fourth and fifth.

Further down the timing sheets, Yuki Tsunoda suffered a difficult Q1 exit in 17th, noting, “I kept forgetting SM!”

The paddock now prepares for a frantic Sunday race where optimal track position will dictate the podium.
