Formula 2 unveiled its 2027 challenger and new on-board starter system during the Italian Grand Prix weekend at Monza.
The new car, designed for the 2027 to 2029 seasons, retains the cost-effective Dallara chassis while introducing heavily revised aerodynamics. These adjusted front and rear wings closely mirror current Formula 1 design philosophies to encourage closer wheel-to-wheel racing.
New On-Board Starter Improves Safety
A critical addition is the on-board starter, integrated through an evolved Hewland gearbox. This mechanism allows drivers to restart their 3.4-litre turbo-charged Mecachrome engines after spinning or stalling, drastically reducing dangerous track stoppages.
FIA Formula 2 Championship CEO Bruno Michel confirmed the primary focus remains rookie preparation.
“When working on this new car, our first goal was to ensure it remains the perfect tool to prepare drivers for F1. Together with the FIA, we have opted for the current chassis and focused on redesigning the front and the rear wings,” Michel said.
Preparing Rookies For Premier Grid
The junior category continues its push towards operational readiness, retaining Pirelli tyres alongside advanced sustainable fuels from Aramco. Followers of formula 1 news will note how these updates precisely mirror top-tier technical demands for emerging talent.
Teams will take delivery of their first chassis kits in December 2026, ahead of a second allocation in January 2027 for pre-season testing.
