Chase Briscoe turned NASCAR’s return to Chicagoland Speedway into a Joe Gibbs Racing statement, holding off Christopher Bell to win Sunday’s eero 400.
The official NASCAR report credited Briscoe’s late control and final-stage strategy after he moved into position and then resisted Bell’s charge in the closing laps. It was Briscoe’s first Cup Series win of the 2026 season, his first at Chicagoland, and the sixth victory of his Cup career.
Briscoe Converts As Byron’s Sweep Fades
William Byron had looked like the early reference point after sweeping the opening two stages, with Denny Hamlin, Ty Gibbs and Ryan Blaney also in the front group during Stage 2. But the race shifted when Briscoe emerged from the final-stage cycle with track position and enough long-run pace to defend it.
That mattered because Chicagoland’s Cup return carried more weight than a normal mid-season stop. NASCAR had not raced at the 1.5-mile Joliet oval since 2019, and the event also formed part of the summer In-Season Challenge picture. ReadMotoSport had already covered Denny Hamlin’s Chicagoland pole and the challenge reset before the race.
JGR Leaves With A Stronger Playoff Signal
For Joe Gibbs Racing, the bigger takeaway is depth. Briscoe beat a charging Bell, Hamlin had already shown qualifying speed, and Gibbs was inside the Stage 2 points. On a track type that still shapes playoff form, that is a useful July marker.
Briscoe now carries fresh momentum into the next phase of the Cup season, while Bell leaves Chicagoland with proof that JGR had more than one car capable of deciding the race.
