Zane Smith Chicagoland Milestone Turns 100th Cup Start Into Breakthrough Test

Zane Smith’s 100th NASCAR Cup Series start now carries more weight than a milestone marker.

The Front Row Motorsports driver will reach the century mark in Sunday’s eero 400 at Chicagoland Speedway, where NASCAR returns to the 1.5-mile Joliet oval for the first time since 2019. Smith arrives in the No. 38 Ford still chasing a first Cup victory, but with enough recent evidence to make the target feel less symbolic than urgent.

NASCAR’s official preview confirmed Smith will make his 100th Cup start at Chicagoland, with the race scheduled for 6pm ET on Sunday. The sanctioning body’s entry list also frames the weekend as the second leg of the 2026 In-Season Challenge, adding bracket pressure to a race already loaded with return-weekend scrutiny.

Why Chicagoland sharpens Smith’s moment

Smith said a first Cup win at Chicagoland would be “awesome”, and the timing matters. NASCAR reported he has already reached six top-10s this season, beating last year’s personal best, while Front Row’s mile-and-a-half form has improved since Charlotte and Nashville.

That puts Smith in a cleaner competitive lane than his wider Cup record suggests. ReadMotorSport has already examined how the Chicagoland reset changes the NASCAR Challenge picture, but Smith’s case is more direct: a developing driver, a returning track, and a team trying to convert credible runs into a decisive result.

NASCAR.com notes Smith has led laps recently but still needs to lead them later. Chicagoland is the next chance to prove that progress has teeth.
