Max Verstappen turned Red Bull’s Austrian Grand Prix weekend from damage control into a clear warning before Silverstone.
The four-time world champion started fifth after his qualifying crash at the Red Bull Ring, but recovered to second behind George Russell, splitting the Mercedes pair and giving Red Bull its best race result of the 2026 Formula 1 season.
Red Bull finally gets a race-day answer
Formula 1’s official post-race account noted that Verstappen cleared Kimi Antonelli and Charles Leclerc at Turn 4 on lap two, then passed Lewis Hamilton after the first pit-stop phase before finishing only 1.6 seconds behind Russell. That made this more than another “what if” weekend for Red Bull.
The key line was the upgrade package. F1 reported that Red Bull arrived in Spielberg with a major development push, while Isack Hadjar’s sixth place added a second data point that the RB22’s window had widened.
Verstappen also won the official Driver of the Day vote with 39.6%, comfortably ahead of Russell’s 11.4%. The public verdict matched the competitive one: Austria looked like the first weekend this year where Red Bull had race pace capable of stressing Mercedes on merit.
ReadMotorSport has already covered Russell’s win as a Mercedes control statement. Verstappen’s side of the same race is different. Red Bull did not win, but it found enough performance to make the British Grand Prix feel far less predictable.
