John Bennett turned the Spielberg Formula 2 Sprint Race into the defining result of his season with a final-lap pass on Sebastian Montoya.
The Trident driver had led away from the front row before Montoya moved ahead at Turn 4, but Bennett stayed close enough to keep the pressure alive through the closing phase. Formula 2’s official report recorded the decisive switchback on the last lap, with Bennett crossing the line for his maiden F2 victory.
A Sprint Race full of drama and an ending to match.
Bennett Converts Pressure Into Trident Breakthrough
Montoya finished second for PREMA Racing, 1.496s behind Bennett, while Rafael Villagomez completed the podium for Van Amersfoort Racing. The result also gave Trident a badly needed headline after a measured Saturday drive built on tyre patience rather than raw aggression.
The race was messy behind them. Rafael Camara was later given a five-second penalty for an opening-lap Turn 3 collision with Tasanapol Inthraphuvasak, dropping him to ninth and promoting Nikola Tsolov into the final points place.
Gabriele Mini still leads the drivers’ standings on 90 points, with Tsolov second on 81. Bennett’s win moves him to 17 points and gives Trident a platform before Sunday’s Feature Race at the Red Bull Ring.
