Caio Collet has turned an awkward Road America weekend into a live AJ Foyt Racing storyline after ending Saturday practice fifth while still managing fractured ribs from last month’s Indianapolis 500 crash.
The Brazilian rookie was listed fifth in the final pre-qualifying session for Sunday’s XPEL Grand Prix at Road America, behind Pato O’Ward, Marcus Armstrong, Scott McLaughlin and David Malukas. The detail matters because Collet’s weekend is not just another rookie learning exercise. He is trying to carry speed through one of IndyCar’s most physical road courses while still dealing with the after-effects of Indianapolis.
Collet adds another Road America thread
IndyCar’s official Saturday practice report noted Collet’s rib issue while placing his No. 4 AJ Foyt Racing Chevrolet inside the top five. That put him in the same conversation as the established weekend stories around O’Ward’s McLaren reset and Armstrong’s Meyer Shank pace.
Road America is rarely kind to anyone carrying an injury. The 4.014-mile circuit asks for heavy braking, commitment through fast corners and repeated physical loading over a 55-lap race distance, which makes Collet’s practice speed a useful marker before the grid is set.
For AJ Foyt Racing, it is also a timely sign of depth on a weekend where Alex Palou’s Road America record chase has dominated the broader championship conversation. Collet does not need to headline the weekend to make it valuable. If he converts that pace into a clean qualifying run, Foyt suddenly has more than a survival story on its hands.
